DUST TO DUSTdrawing series (coloured pencil on paper)

 In 2014 I started a series of drawings called "dust to dust". I draw the dust, hair and stains as well as useless
 plastic parts. All things that accumulate by themselves in my studio. They are, so to speak,
 manifestations that arise, mostly unconsciously, through my own being and that of the people close to me. I
 am particularly interested in the things that we would rather not see and usually prefer to dispose of or hide.
 The process of drawing takes almost as long as it takes for dust fluff and other things to accumulate 
naturally. The unwanted, incidental product takes on new meaning and value as a colored pencils drawing. By 
transforming this microcosm in drawing, I try to find parallels to the macrocosm, accepting the inherent
 contradictions. While science explores the composition of matter, I try to understand the meaning of matter
 through the means of art. To illustrate the connection between microcosm and macrocosm, the concept 
involves getting „dustdrawings“ out into the world again through exhibitions and sales.
 In my search for an answer to the question of what constitutes the meaning of life, I realise how relative our
 individual answers can be. Just as relative as the perception of the viewer, who often finds it difficult to
 distinguish between the real and the drawn dust when looking at my drawings.

 Liquid leaks, splashes, drips, and spills. Mostly unintentionally. It penetrates porous material, the fat content in it bonds with its new carrier, stubbornly sticking to and settling in it. As a result, the stain can hardly be separated from the substance it now permanently inhabits. How does a grease stain come about? Michhail Michailov turns the unintentional, the disruptive, even the undesirable into a subject. With colored pencils and a certain obsession, he draws in a meticulous process everything that is not usually supposed to be there and, especially in connection with art, must be avoided at all costs. Stains are the reason why white gloves are worn by all those who handle precious originals in museums and other (art) institutions. They are intended to prevent the body fat on the hands from coming into contact with the surfaces of the artworks, documents,

As in the series "dust to dust," Michailov deals with the situational conditions of his respective studios.This 
time, however, he does not take a closer look at the studio floor, but at its ceiling. The specific peculiarities of 
a microcosm that have developed over the years are to be depicted. In particular, the artist is now on the 
lookout for architectural weak points such as wall cracks, water stains or chipped wall edges.The artistic 
depiction of such weak points is intended to make the viewer think and, if necessary, lead to self-reflection in 
search of their own "weak points."

 The connection between desolate housing and environmental damage came to me once when I was 
watching a ceiling dripping and the damage it caused - with the difference that a defective roof can be

For EXPO CHICAGO 2026, Michail Michailov&#38;nbsp;explores the perspectives of ground-level&#38;nbsp;and overhead, and the forces set in motion between them. The space of ‘ground’ connotes an earthbound, anchoring physicality, a limit condition of the human, a level where one’s precarious footing is subject to the forces of gravity. ‘Overhead’ is the vast expanse above, a dimension of elevation, where one rises and pushes away from all ground bases of materiality. Between them lies an interplay of levels, a continuum of propelling upwards, falling down, holding on and balancing with sideway movements, ultimately situating us along a spectrum of spatial coordinates and intricate fissures. It is within this spatial matrix that Michailov prompts an exploration of the physical, emotional, and philosophical implications of the human condition. Michailov's colored pencil drawings (Dust to Dust series) bring the ground into focus by recreating its trace evidence in microscopic detail. The artist renders flecks of dirt, dust particles, and strands of hair&#38;nbsp;in deceptively realistic, trompe l'oeil style. As representative marks of attentiveness, each drawing demands close-up inspection,&#38;nbsp;and ultimately, introspection. The minutiae of everyday life becomes reconfigured as a conduit for existential reflection.

Self-Brainwashing is an installation and performance that explores the shape and density of realities and the (de-)programming of the self through playful interventions. Inspired by ‘90s foam parties, Self-Brainwashing explores how whimsy, irreverence, and play might be effective stratagems to detangle and dissolve societal and psychological indoctrination and mental conditioning.Participants are invited to wear white protective suits as they become gradually enveloped in ethereal, white foam. The experience creates a compelling duality of sensation—simultaneously delightful and disorienting—as participants find their senses both awakened and challenged by the surrounding foam environment. Foam, as a material, holds a paradoxical position. On one level, it seems almost too trivial for the seriousness of the subject at hand—brainwashing. It is the stuff of bath-time, of mass-market advertisements, of commercial culture, which is itself imbued with the emptiness of the post-Communist consumerist boom. But this very triviality is part of what makes it so pointed. The foam’s insubstantiality, its very impermanence, underscores the ephemerality of the ideological forces it represents. Ideology is rarely the product of forceful, violent indoctrination (though that is certainly part of it); more often, it operates on the level of suggestion, of the trivial and the banal, and of absorption into the everyday. From history, we have associated brainwashing with the overt methods of totalitarian states; here, Michailov reminds us of the quieter, more insidious forms of ideological control that have their roots in consumerism, in spectacle, and in the transformation of culture into a commodity.

Foam is its constant state of flux—it is never fully solid or liquid, but exists as an in-between substance, just as ideology operates in ways that are never fully visible but always active. To be immersed in foam is to experience an ideological system not as an alien, hostile force, but as something that one is absorbed into. Michailov’s very physicality in the foam brings this home. The performance enacts the conditions of alienation, of being ‘at one’ with a system that simultaneously renders the individual both invisible and overly visible. His body is swallowed by the foam, as though his identity is being overwritten or erased, but it is a gentle erasure—one that is less violent and more insidiously soft.

The spatial dynamics of Michailov's interactive work invite us to alter our own perception, (mis- and self-perception), and to go down a rabbit hole of existential inquiry: Where do I begin? Where do I end? Where do I come from and where am I going? Do I exist in the absence of my fellow human beings? How responsible am I to my surroundings? These questions become increasingly urgent in the age of AI, when human and computer interfaces are nearing the event horizon of singularity. Michailov describes the concept of Self-Brainwashing in computational terms, “like a hard drive deleting itself.” 

Further thickening the experience, Michailov will collaborate&#38;nbsp;with sound artists&#38;nbsp;to create and play original compositions during the performance.&#38;nbsp;Through a choreography of irreverent materiality and social constructions, Self-Brainwashing aims to create an intuitive yet mindful arena of wonder and play, where everyone can lose, or momentarily delete, the “self” whilst also finding themselves somewhere in the process.

"Huldra (Leaving the Door Ajar)" takes its title from the Norwegian mythological figure of the same name. Huldra, originally meaning "the hidden one," appears in folkloric tales across the country - always sly, visible for barely a second their near - human form betrayed only by the telltale presence of a cow’s or fox’s tail. Often depicted naked in the woods, they seduce unsuspecting, lustful wanderers to bring them into her realm, the subterranean.&#38;nbsp;This work seeks to encircle this subject: An exhibitionist who chooses to remain unseen. A ghostly presence inhabits a generic art space—perhaps a studio, a gallery, or a place of storage. The door remains slightly ajar; through its narrow aperture, a blade of light offers the camera the barest chance to register motion. Something—someone—passes, but remains unresolved.Their gestures resist interpretation: is this a struggle or an embrace? An invitation, or a warning? Have they infiltrated the institution—a museum, a gallery—or were they always part of its architecture, merely unacknowledged? These are no ordinary trespassers, but interlopers of attention: figures who haunt the peripheries of visibility, who crave the gaze even as they recoil from its fixity and capture.They do not steal objects, but moments. They do not want to own, but to be momentarily known—and then forgotten.Will they ever leave? Or is their exile precisely the point?

Upon first glance, Dust to Dust may seem like a minimalist installation in the baroque ambiance of Carlone Hall. However, upon closer inspection, the display’s space-consuming surface reveals profound poetry. Michail Michailov has meticulously crafted an 18-part series of colored pencil drawings that capture the often unnoticed and incidental vestiges of time, such as dust, hair, marks, and stains. In its simplicity, this microcosm touches on themes of value, transience, and the existence of things. The artist states, “While science explores matter through its composition, I try to understand its mean- ing through art.” Michailov’s drawings are incredibly realistic due to his mastery of the illusionist trompe l’oeil technique, and echo the tradition of Carlo Innocenzo Carlone, who, centuries prior, decorated the ceiling of Carlone Hall with the fresco Triumphs of Aurora—a depiction of the victory of light over darkness.

The search for life’s meaning is a process which continues until we die maybe even after that. But just running in a circle without the slightest attempt to break from it would be unsatisfying for me. That’s why, through this series of different repetaive actions I try to take the viewers out of their usual context. I believe that a new way of thinking, new perceptions and experiences can take us, step by step, to the answer of the fundamental question who we really are.
